Graphite Electrode 2
Electrodes for EDM made from artificial graphite materials have the following advantages:
1. Good processing performance. Graphite is very soft and can be easily processed by hand. It can be processed by general equipment. Grinding processing method is often used. Care should be taken not to cut excessively.
2. No deformation occurs. Since the linear expansion coefficient of graphite material is very small and it has been graphitized at a temperature as high as nearly 3000°C, the deformation caused by heat during use is very small. Therefore, even if the electrode is a thin plate, there is no need to worry about deformation such as bending. In addition, graphite electrodes have very good thermal shock resistance.
3. Light weight. The pseudo-density of artificial graphite electrodes is 1.55~1.85g/cm3, which is much smaller than metal. This helps EDM machine tools to install large electrodes. Therefore, it is beneficial to use graphite as electrodes when processing large parts.
4. Able to bond. You may encounter smaller graphite electrode blanks during use, but this does not affect the use of graphite. Using conductive adhesives to bond small pieces of material into large electrodes can be done without problems such as thermal deformation.
5. Cheap price. The price of graphite electrodes (unit volume) is less than half of copper, 1/120-1/140 of silver-calcium alloy, and 1/60-1/70 of copper-calcium alloy.
6. The processing speed during rough machining and intermediate machining is faster than using other electrode materials.
